Transitioning towards a greener economy means profound changes in industries and employment. This event examines the challenges of employment transitions with a focus on the geographical and social implications of structural shifts.
Concentrating on the role of Emission Intensive Manufacturing (EIM) industries, the research presented analyses the geographical and socio-economic characteristics of workers in high emitting industries compared to other manufacturing and service sectors.
Authors Anke Hassel (Hertie School), Sofía Gómez (Jacques Delors Centre), Jannik Jansen (Jacques Delors Centre), and Kilian Weil (Hertie School) find that these jobs are predominantly located in regions within EU manufacturing heartlands. They are marked by embracing a higher share of male workers with mid-level skills and limited levels of training. Moreover, they are relatively well paid. For some regions and some workers, employment in EIM is highly significant.
Based in this research, the event will explore the geographical and socio-economic challenges of employment transitions in EIM sectors, the role of EU regional policies, and the tools needed to facilitate a just transition.
