This overview-style lecture will summarise the recent microeconomics literature from the United States and Europe which suggests that social norms about men’s and women’s expected roles inside and outside the household can result in gender disparities in the labour market. We will end with a discussion about policy implications at the level of the household, the firm, and the country.
