The workshop, convened by Professor Filip Kostelka, will bring together scholars, both from the East and the West, who empirically study political realities in Central and Eastern Europe through within-country, between-country, or between-region (e.g., East-West) comparison. Papers should focus on studying public opinion and attitudes, voting, elections, political parties, inter-group relations, and political participation.

Different methodologies are welcome, but submissions that employ quantitative or mixed methods will be given priority. Each accepted paper will be thoroughly discussed, and the workshop will offer excellent opportunities for establishing professional connections and collaborations.

Distinguished EUI faculty members, namely Professors Simon Hix and Hanspeter Kriesi, will participate as both presenters and discussants.

The workshop is entirely free of charge. Participants who are academically based in selected countries* are eligible for full reimbursement of their travel and accommodation costs (of up to 750 euros):

*In the European Union: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Outside the European Union: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo(1), Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

Learn more in the call for papers. The deadline to submit an abstract is 28 March 2025, 12:00 CET.

This initiative is funded by the EUI Widening Europe Programme. Backed by contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, the programme is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness, and quality in research in targeted Widening countries, and thus foster more cohesive European Higher Education and Research Areas.
