Giancarlo Casale is Professor of Early Modern History of the Mediterranean at the EUI History Department. His research focuses on the intersections between the intellectual life of the Ottoman Empire and Renaissance Italy, with a particular interest in antiquarianism, cartography, cosmography, and other forms of early modern science.

At the EUI, he is Principal Investigator of the research projects OTTOGLOB - Ottoman sefaretnames: a new source base for the early history of global diplomacy and DIPLOWIDE - Widening the origins of global diplomacy: Triangulating archives and diplomatic practices in early 18th-century Eastern Europe. Professor Casale is also involved in the Working Group on Methods in Early Modern History (MEMH), and in the Diplomatic/International History Working Group.

In reacting to his new appointment, Professor Casale shares, "The EUI History Department is a special place, a uniquely trans-national institution where researchers from across the European continent (and beyond) research and debate the past on equal terms. I can't imagine a more exciting place to be an historian."

Professor Casale succeeds Professor Corinna Unger as Head of Department.
