In the second episode of the #MyEUIResearch video series, we spotlight Mateus Correia de Carvalho, a doctoral researcher at the EUI Department of Law whose research focuses on the role of civil society in identifying systemic risks within the European Union’s AI governance framework.

Correia de Carvalho discusses the need for contestation spaces for civil society actors and underrepresented communities in the EU’s risk governance for algorithms and AI systems. While EU regulation on the matter often focuses on technical issues, Correia de Carvalho argues that, ultimately, the law should also account for the impact of AI systems on complex societal dynamics.

Mateus Correia de Carvalho is a doctoral researcher at the EUI Department of Law and Junior Editor of the European Journal of Legal Studies. His latest publications, Controlling the new rulemakers: a much-needed constitutional framework for outsourced regulation and No need to look, trust me! Mutual trust and distrust in the European arrest warrant system are also available on Cadmus, the EUI Research Repository.
