Davide Tomaselli is a first-year researcher hailing from a beautiful village near Bergamo, in the northern region of Lombardy. He joined the EUI Law Department with a rich academic background: while studying at the prestigious Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Political Science at the University of Pisa, followed by a Master in International Relations at the University of Florence. It was during these years that Davide discovered his interest in migrations, political philosophy, and activism which led him to co-found a feminist and queer students' association in his home institution. Davide also gained several hands-on experiences thanks to a traineeship at the Court of Florence where he assisted judges with second-instance asylum procedures. Furthermore, he collaborated with the Greek NGO 'Solidarity Now', providing legal aid for migrants and asylum seekers, and contributed to the research activity of the Italian team in the Horizon-2020 project Vulner in Ca' Foscari, Venice.

Prompted by his Master's thesis on the role of vulnerability in the assessment of SOGIESC asylum claims, he then moved to Amsterdam to pursue an LLM in Public International Law with a thesis on the deconstruction of the migrant/refugee binary through the example of SOGIESC asylum claims.

Acknowledging his non-traditional law background, Davide explains that he is fascinated by the undercover aspects of the law, its power dynamics, and the relations with societal and cultural issues. The Law Department, with its international dimension and interdisciplinary approach, was the logical next step in Davide's academic journey. Leveraging his rich experiences, Davide wants to focus on the impact of European Law on LGBTIQ+ migrants, especially how queer theories can provide analytical concepts to unveil hidden structures and paradoxes behind the workings of European Law. Davide hopes that his work will not just remain in the realm of academia but will also have a positive, empowering impact on society. Looking ahead, he is confident that the EUI will provide him with the right tools and perfect opportunities to craft his future career.

We are very happy to have such a promising talent in our cohort and extend a warm welcome to Davide.
