Leadership Challenged: Politics and Policy-Making in the European Union at a Time of Crisis

Programme Description

This Executive Training Seminar focused on the tensions and challenges faced by EU politics and policy-making at a time of crisis. The three distinguished course providers shared their respective experiences and undertook a critical analysis of the EU’s ongoing polycentric crisis. Drawing from the expertise of José Manuel Barroso, Kalypso Nicolaïdis and Emily Jones, participants took part in several training activities on negotiation strategies and tactics (covering concepts such as: BATNA – best alternative to negotiated agreement; ZOPA – zone of possible agreement; anchoring; signalling; multi-level games; creating versus distributing values, and the negotiation dilemma). During the seminar, participants also engaged in discussions on strategic topics such as the EU’s financial crisis; Brexit; the Single Market in Services; the politics and political economy of trade negotiations; the EU and global economic governance; public opinion in the EU (based on expert analysis of polls and the public sphere); and EU external relations, including EU-Russia and Transatlantic relations.
