Biography
Dr Andrea Calderaro is a Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies Fellow and Coordinator of the “Cyber Diplomacy and Digital Transformations in the Global South” Project at the Global Peace Tech Hub / School of Transnational Governance. He is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in International Relations, director of the Centre for Internet and Global Politics, and a member of the Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics at Cardiff University. He holds his PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute.
His research centres on Technology and International Relations, with a focus on cybersecurity, cyber diplomacy, transnational governance of the internet, digital transformations in the Global South, and the role of the EU in international cooperation in the cyber domain. He has conducted research and supported cyber capacity building initiatives in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central America, and in EU institutions. His current research addresses Cyber Security Capacity Building in the Global South and Cyber Diplomacy via two ESRC IAA funded projects on “Decolonizing International Cooperation in the Cyber Domain: the promise of building Cyber Diplomacy Capacity” (2022-), “Cybersecurity Capacity Building in the Global South” (2021-), and was principle investigator of the projects “Framing an EU Cybersecurity Strategy” (2017-2018), and “Technology for Peace and Security” (2012) funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
He has published co-edited volumes, including “Internet Diplomacy: shaping the global politics of cyberspace” (2022, Rowman & Littlefield), articles appeared on “Third World Quarterly”, “Policy and Internet”, “International Journal of E-Politics”, “European Security”, and he is a co-Editor of the “Digital Technologies and Global Politics” Book Series at Rowman & Littlefield. His work has featured on Al Jazeera "Inside Story", BBC, BBC Radio, Rai News 24, Radio Rai, The New Statesman, The Verge, New York Times, Reuters, La Repubblica, Open Democracy, Deutsche Welle.
He is a member of the Global Forum of Cyber Expertise (GFCE)' Research Board, and served as a member of the "EU Cyber Capacity Building" Task Force (European Commission/EUISS), the UN Open-Ended Working Group on “Developments in the field of information and telecommunications in the context of international security”, the UNESCO "Internet Universality Program" Advisory Board, the Global Internet Policy Observatory’s Advisory Group (European Commission), the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)'s Advisory Board on Cyber Diplomacy, and of the Civil Society Information Society Advisory Council Board at the OECD. With his research, Dr Calderaro has supported initiatives led by the House of Lords, UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), European Commission, EU Parliament, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (German Development Agency - GIZ), United Nations.
He has been a Visiting Fellow and worked at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech), Humboldt University, LUISS Guido Carli, University La Sapienza, University of Oslo.
