Biography

Ana Macanović completed her PhD in Sociology from Utrecht University in 2024. Before joining the EUI, Ana was a postdoctoral researcher at the Radboud University. She received a BA in Sociology from the University of Belgrade and an MSc in Economics from the University of Amsterdam.

Ana’s interests lie at the intersection of economic sociology and sociology of science. She studies how structural inequalities arise in societies and how they can be addressed. She is also interested in understanding how individuals from diverse social backgrounds come to trust each other, cooperate, innovate, and develop shared social norms in a variety of contexts. To understand these processes, Ana relies on formal models, computer simulations, and computational analyses of large empirical datasets.

In her PhD project, Ana explored mechanisms that support cooperative relations in contexts where legal assurances are largely absent. She also studied cultural innovation by analysing community-level social norms and shared language emergence. In her postdoctoral research thus far, Ana has been tracing the drivers of inequality in the media representation of men and women academics. At the EUI, Ana will continue exploring how structural inequalities emerge and affect outcomes and cooperation within different social groups.

Ana has taught a BA-level advanced sociological theory course and supervised sociology bachelor students’ theses. She also supervised theses for the masters in Applied Data Science at Utrecht University.
