Biography

Dieuwke Zwier is a postdoctoral researcher in the LEARN (Longitudinal Educational Achievements: Reducing iNequalities) project at the Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) at the European University Institute (EUI) and the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Her research interests include social stratification, the sociology of education, and social network analysis. In the LEARN project, she studies the emergence and development of inequalities at key transition points in students’ educational careers in the Netherlands, and assesses the effectiveness of policy interventions aimed at reducing these inequalities. For this purpose, she uses large-scale administrative data and quantitative methods.

Prior to joining EUI, Dieuwke was a PhD candidate at the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam, where she was affiliated with the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) and the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS). Her dissertation focused on socio-economic disparities in secondary school choice and the role of peers in educational decision-making. She also contributed to the PRIMS (the transition from PRIMary to Secondary education) data collection, taught courses on quantitative methods to bachelor's and research master's students, and supervised bachelor thesis projects.
