Biography

Filippo Morello is a Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor in Comparative Private Law at the University of Pisa. His main areas of expertise are comparative and European private law, especially contract and consumer law. His research focuses on the law of consumer finance and, in particular, consumer credit law. He is interested in the private welfare function of consumer finance, the intersection between European and national private law, and the role of private regulation in retail financial markets.

As a Max Weber Fellow, Filippo will work on the role of private regulation in consumer finance from a comparative perspective. His research hypothesis is that beyond the EU regulation in some domains of consumer finance, private ordering power is the main source of law that creates private entitlements and trading environments. The legitimacy and extent of this power largely depend on how permissive domestic financial regulation and private law are.

After reading Law at the University of Pisa, the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, and the University of Oxford (MJur), he completed his PhD in co-supervision at the University of Pisa and the University of Osnabrück in 2023. Before joining the University of Pisa as a Research Fellow, he was a Land Steiermark Fellow at the University of Graz.

Filippo has published in Italian and European law journals, mainly in the field of consumer contract law.
