Biography

Gráinne de Búrca specialises in European Union law, human rights, and global public law. She is currently a Professor of Law at the European University Institute (EUI), on leave from her position as the Florence Ellinwood Allen Professor of Law at New York University (NYU), where she has been a faculty member since 2011.

Prof. De Búrca's academic journey includes tenured positions at Harvard Law School and Fordham Law School, and an earlier tenure at the EUI from 1998 to 2005. Her career began at the University of Oxford, where she was a lecturer and Fellow of Somerville College from 1990 to 1998, and served as Deputy Director of the Centre for European and Comparative Law.

Her scholarly contributions include co-editing the Oxford University Press series "Oxford Studies in European Law" and co-authoring the leading textbook "EU Law: Text, Cases, and Materials." Her research focuses on the intersection of law and politics, European constitutional law, and human rights. She has authored or edited numerous books and articles, and is a co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Constitutional Law (I·CON)

In 2016 she was elected as a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, and in 2022 as an Honorary Member of the Royal Irish Academy .
