Biography

Kim Stienstra is a sociologist with a research interest in educational inequality, social stratification, and gene-environment interplay. She obtained her PhD at the Department of Sociology at Utrecht University, as part of the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS) graduate school. In her dissertation, ‘Educational quality and inequality: the interplay between schools, families, and genes,’ she combined theories and methods from sociology and behavioural genetics to study educational inequalities.

As a Max Weber Fellow at the EUI, Kim continues her research on compensatory and cumulative effects in education, with an emphasis on the role of schools. For this purpose, she uses statistical modelling along with large-scale administrative data.

Kim has taught a course on statistics and social stratification to bachelor and pre-master students at Utrecht University. Additionally, she supervised students writing their bachelor’s thesis.
