Luuk van der Baaren is a legal researcher whose interests focus on citizenship and immigration law. He specializes in comparative law and empirical legal studies. He obtained his PhD degree in Law in 2020 at the University of Liège and Maastricht University with a thesis titled ‘On emigrant nationality: A comparative analysis of the toleration of dual nationality from an emigration perspective’. He is on leave from Copenhagen University, where he is based as a postdoctoral researcher at the DNRF Center of Excellence for Global Mobility Law (MOBILE). Previously, Luuk was a research associate at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. As a Max Weber Fellow, Luuk will work on several research projects that study the nexus between citizenship and mobility. These projects aim to build empirical legal frameworks for the study of legal regimes for entry and settlement rights. The projects also examine from an infrastructural lens how the issuance and recognition of travel documents shape human mobility.
