Maria Demertzis is the Deputy Director at Bruegel, a Brussels-based economic think-tank that specialises in European policy. She has previously worked at the European Commission and the research department of the Dutch Central Bank where she worked on issues of macroeconomic forecasting, modelling, and policy advice. She has also held academic positions at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in the USA, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Strathclyde in the UK, from where she holds a Ph.D. in economics. She has published extensively in international academic journals and contributed regular policy inputs to both the European Commission's and the Dutch Central Bank's policy outlets. Demertzis writes a regular column that appears bimonthly in several national European economic daily newspapers and contributes opinion pieces regularly to broader national and international newspapers. She is a regular speaker at national and international events that deal with issues of policy design in Europe. Her current research focuses on issues of the digital economy, macroeconomic design, and the global multilateral system.
