Biography

Monica Viken is a Professor of Law and serves as the Associate Dean for the Bachelor and Master program in Law at BI Norwegian Business School.

She earned her Ph.D. in Law from the Copenhagen Business School in 2011, focusing her dissertation on the evidential significance of market surveys in trademark and marketing law litigation. Her research primarily delves into intellectual property law, marketing law, and contract law, with a keen interest in the intersections of these fields with EU/EEA law. Additionally, she contributed to the European Patent Organisation's Academic Advisory Board for several years.

Since 1996, Viken has demonstrated a strong commitment to education, teaching both large and small classes at BI and coordinating numerous legal courses across various academic levels. She has also held leadership roles, such as Head of the Department of Law and Governance and Associate Dean for the Bachelor program in Law and Business.

Viken plays a role in the academic community as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Business Law (Tidsskrift for forretningsjus) in Norway and as a peer reviewer for the Oxford Academics journal GRUR International and the Nordic Intellectual Property Law Review (Nordiskt Immateriellt Rättsskydd – NIR). She is also on the Advisory Board for Karnov Group Norway.

Her expertise in survey evidence related to trademark cases makes her a sought-after expert witness in Scandinavian courts.

Furthermore, Viken’s professional contributions are recognized through her appointment as Chair of the Norwegian Market Council (Markedsrådet).
