Biography

Rachael Kei Kawasaki completed her PhD at Kyoto University, Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability in March 2024. Her research investigates the role of local and national factors in determining attitudes towards immigrants across countries, in particular the role of income inequality, deprivation, and political attitudes. She was previously a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge, Department of Land Economy and is a matriculated member of Pembroke College, where she studied income and life satisfaction inequalities amongst immigrants and the UK-born, as well as amongst immigrant groups. She has conducted internships at OECD International Migration Division, where she focused on Asian labour migration, as well as UNESCO Bangkok, working on migrant children’s learning outcomes in non-formal learning centres.

At the EUI, she intends to continue investigating how attitudes towards immigrants shape and are shaped by other drivers of integration, such as intermarriage and labour market assimilation. She hopes that her research will help elucidate the challenges and opportunities for diverse, sustainable communities
