Biography

Renata Cabral Bernabé is a historian of early-modern eastern Asia and Europe. She received her PhD in 2018 at the graduate school of Social History from University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, having completed a one-year research internship at Sophia University (上智大学) in Tokyo, Japan (2014-2015). Before joining EUI, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Tohoku University (東北大学) in Sendai, Japan, from 2019-2021 and at USP in 2022. She is a specialist in the activities of the Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries in Japan during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As a CAPASIA research assistant, she will work on the trade system the Portuguese built in Asia and the relations they developed with the local communities.
