Biography

Tiago Antunes has a long and diverse professional record in the fields of law and policy. Along with his academic career, he has held public office for several years, in different capacities and often with a strong connection to the European Union.

He has a PhD in Law from the University of Lisbon, where he has been a member of the Faculty since 2001 and is a Researcher of the Lisbon Public Law Research Centre (LPL). He has served as Secretary of State for European Affairs (2022-2024), Secretary of State Assistant to the Prime Minister (2019-2022) and Secretary of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (2017-2019). Beyond his multifaceted experience in the Portuguese Government, he has also worked at the European Parliament (2016-2017). He has authored an extensive number of publications, namely in the fields of Environmental, Administrative, Constitutional and European Union Law, and is regularly invited to speak at conferences and seminars, both in Portugal and abroad.

As Senior Fellow at the Florence STG, he will look into the forthcoming enlargement(s) of the European Union and the accompanying process of internal reforms the EU will have to go through in order to be able to accept and function efficiently with up to ten new Member States. In particular, he will focus on the rule of law, not only as an accession criterion for candidate countries, but as a permanent requirement of EU membership, searching for ways to improve the EU rule of law toolbox and thus ensure a high level of protection for fundamental rights and democratic institutions throughout a wider European Union.
