Research project

The Italian-Swiss diaspora press in 20th century San Francisco

This project has received funding via the EUI ESR call 2025, dedicated to Early Stage Researchers.

How and why do diaspora communities bound by a language but separated by a nationality differentiate themselves? This project shall examine the case studies of L’Elvezia and La Colonia Svizzera – two Italian-language newspapers of the Swiss diaspora - and compare them with the Italian L’Italia to uncover points of convergence, divergence, and differentiation in the Italian-speaking diasporas of early 20th Century San Francisco. This will contribute to our understanding as to the strategies diaspora communities that shared a language and lived side by side adopted to maintain a distinct national identity.
