Purpose

Course Abstract:
This course aims to provide an overview of research into the economics of religion. This rapidly growing field of study uses rigorous economic methods to understand the role of religion in shaping socio-economic outcomes, both historically and in the present day. Throughout the course, we will cover studies addressing the following questions: How should economists think about religion? How can we measure and model religious beliefs? Does religion cause conflict or promote prosocial behavior? In what ways can religion affect economic growth? Which countries today have state religions? What is the relationship between religion and the state? How has this relationship changed over time in ways that favor or hamper innovation and growth? By the end of the course, as part of student assessment, PhD researchers will review a paper in progress and asked to discuss the future of the research area.
