Description
The seminar aims at rewriting, from a legal perspective, Ben Judah’s book This is Europe. The Way We Live Now. The book consists of a series of short stories and portraits based on interviews about different forms of ‘ordinary’ lives in today’s Europe: from the dock-worker in Rotterdam to the Romanian lorry driver, from the Erasmus student in Turkey to the sex worker coming from Aleppo and the migrant in limbo. By considering the thin yet rich material collected in this book as our ground field, we will investigate the role of law in informing – or not, structuring – or destructuring the lives of these ‘ordinary’ Europeans.
The seminar will include both methodological sessions on how to approach everyday experience and ‘lived lives’ through Law (social theory, critical studies, legal geography, cultural study, legal consciousness, legal institutionalism, philosophy of the everyday) and substantive sessions on selected cases and stories – exploring the role of law, European law in particular, in these cases.
As an outcome of this seminar, depending on the collaboration developed during the seminar, our aim its to prepare a collective publication on ‘This is Legal Europe’.
Participants attending the seminar (working individually or in groups) are expected to investigate the place of law, or the lack thereof, in one of the portraits and stories compiled by Ben Judah in his book, "This is Europe. The Way We Live Now" (Picador, 2023), and to present their findings during the seminar. A few copies of the book are available at the EUI library.
