Description
The workshop will provide a real-life case study-based understanding of how consulting firms offer strategic advice to public institutions, with a particular focus on advice related to Climate and Sustainability themes. Students will be presented with real-life case studies based on projects done by consulting firms and will be asked to provide fact-based actionable recommendations to the client institutions. The case discussion will be led by the senior consultants who worked on the project.
Prior to the case studies, the workshop will also provide an introduction to the consulting industry, a quick overview of the different theoretical approaches used manage public institutions and deliver policy outcomes, and it will introduce students to the “toolbox of a strategy consultant”, i.e. what students would learn in tour first six months at a strategy firm. The teaching approach is based on the Case-method (link) used in MBAs.
Course objectives
1. Provide a quick overview of some of the theoretical approaches used to manage public institutions and deliver policy outcomes (e.g., Weberian Bureaucracy, New Public Management, Complexity-inspired approaches)
2. Equip students to understand how consulting firms work with public institutions, with a particular focus on the largest players
3. Provide a quick introduction to the “toolbox of the strategist”, with a particular focus on top-down problem solving (e.g., the “pyramid principle”) and communication
4. Present real-life case studies, engage students in active discussion and ask them to provide evidence-based recommendations
The concepts of this course will help students to do problem solving in their professional life, whether that is in the private or public sector. The course will also give them exposure to the consulting industry and may support them in their future career choices and employability.
