Description
This course is designed to introduce you to the kinds of knowledge that are used in policy-making and other kinds of governance decision-making, and to encourage you to think deeply about how different forms of knowledge influence the operation of transnational governance. The course will also provide a forum in which you can practice your own knowledge communication skills.
The purpose of this course is to explore 'knowledge' in the context of transnational decision-making. This course covers the nature of knowledge; the acquisition of knowledge; and the communication of that knowledge. It links closely with the methods complementary course in the spring semester, which takes a more detailed look at the ways in which knowledge is acquired through research.
This course does with four key components. First, Professor Radaelli will begin the course with a session on thinking like a social scientist. This session will reflect on the ways that knowledge is constructed in the social sciences, and how to begin to analyse and critique that information. Second, Professor Rubio Marin will then encourage you to think about how to widen the forms of knowledge you include in policy making, thinking about inclusive knowledge generation. Third, Professor van Zeben will outline the legal and policy distinctions regarding what types of knowledge and facts are considered ‘good’ and who decides on this in law and policymaking. Finally, Dr Taffoni will introduce you to evidence-based policymaking and encourage you to put your skills into practice in considering an example case on glyphosate and the graded case study on arctic governance.
Optionally, instructors from CALL can work with you on how you communicate your knowledge to others, working on your academic writing skills.
