Description
Methods and research designs describe the way(s) how we acquire knowledge. Not only because we seem to live in times of increasing doubts on scientific results, it is essential to ask how and in which quality research results are produced. Knowing about design issue sand the methodological toolkit of empirical studies therefore enables the students to develop an enhanced capacity to judge other people’s research results, but also to deal themselves with scientific or policy questions in an appropriate, systematic, and high-quality way. Therefore, this course is an important addition to the study of empirical substance and of theoretical approaches.
This course provides a systematic overview of research designs and social science methods at the Master level. The sequence of sessions follows important steps in the research process that are decisive for the success or failure of a research project. Special elements are dedicated to research styles and design types.
The students will benefit from a pluralistic approach towards various research design options and methodological trade-offs that places usefulness and quality-working at the center of attention. After this course, students will be able to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies they consult for their work, but also to choose a research design for their own practical or scientific work.
