Description
Policymakers tend to be pressed for time and receive too much information from many different quarters. Those who want their arguments to be seen and to influence policy must learn how to communicate their ideas for policy change or important data and key messages as clearly as possible not only to the ministerial / cabinet level but also to other opinion leaders and the educated lay public.
Over the course of six afternoon workshop sessions, MTnG students will be introduced to the problems and pitfalls of writing for decision-makers. Students will also learn about the value of this kind of communication.
The workshop will address a number of themes:
• Bridging Research and Policy
• Different types of policy writing and targeted audiences
• How to structure and deliver a policy paper, write an executive summary/abstract and formulate recommendations vis-à-vis policymakers.
• How to turn ‘dry facts’ into interesting stories
• To understand the “dark side” of policy writing, i.e., disinformation, and how to prepare for it.
• The trials and tribulations of writing for government agencies and senior officials.
