On 7 March Wolfgang Schäuble, German Minister of Finance, will give a lecture on "Europe - Economic and Institutional Perspectives" (“Europa - ökonomische und institutionelle Perspektiven” - the speech will be held in German and simultaneously translated into English and Italian). The lecture and debate are organised in the framework of the EUI’s Debating Europe series and will take place in the Refectory of the Badia Fiesolana, on Wednesday 7 March at 19:15. The President of the European University Institute Josep Borrell will open the lecture and Elena Carletti, Professor in the Department of Economics, will serve as moderator of the event, which will be followed by a reception in the Cloister of the Badia Fiesolana.
Wolfgang Schäuble is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), currently serving as the Federal Minister of Finance in the Second Cabinet Merkel. From 1984 to 1991 he was a member of Helmut Kohl's cabinet, first as Federal Minister for Special Affairs of Germany and Chief of the Chancellery and then as Federal Minister of the Interior. Between 1991 and 2000, he was chairman of the CDU/CSU group in the parliament, and from 1998 to 2000 also CDU party chairman. He served again as Federal Minister of the Interior in the First Cabinet Merkel from 2005 to 2009.
Debating Europe is a new pillar of the EUI’s activities, focused on debating the process of European integration and the major issues confronting contemporary European society. In line with the Convention setting up the EUI, this programme will be a primary platform for the exchange and discussion of ideas and experiences. Debating Europe is conceptualised as a high-level initiative that reflects on – and impacts – the European policy debate, and that enables the EUI to contribute to this debate.
