Consultation of documents

Readers are registered when they arrive at the reception of the Archives on presentation of an identity document. Students need a letter of introduction from their research supervisor.

You can use laptops in the Reading Room. Adaptors are available at the Reception. You can connect to the Internet using your laptop with a wifi connection or a cable after registration to the desk. There are two computers in the Archives for use by researchers.

To protect the archives deposited at the HAEU from deterioration, no photocopying of archival records is allowed. Whenever possible, the archives are consulted in their microform or digital format. Microform readers in the reading room are equipped with digital copying software. 
The use of private digital photo devices is permitted. A digital photo device may also be requested at the reception for use in the reading room upon signature for loan on a daily basis. In exceptional cases, archives staff at the reception may carry out digitisation services on request.

The database is the interface for archival analysis of the fonds and collections held at the Historical Archives. Use the link to carry out a search to search the Archives database by keywords, date, file number or old reference code.

No, but you can make copies. Use of the copies must be within the framework of the copyright rules.

The catalogue for the Archives’ reference library is available on-line on the website of the European University Institute at Catalogue.

The word ARCHIV next to the shelf number means that the book is available in the Archives.

Certain public and private documents held at the Historical Archives are subject to specific access conditions. It is the users’ responsibility to adhere to the information provided in the finding aids about these restrictions and if necessary seek for additional permission.
