Open Air Museum of Industry and Steel

The Historical Archives of the European Union has granted its patronage to the Italian Association for the Preservation of the Industrial Heritage (AIPAI ) and the Comune of Piombino for the research project with the aim of establishing an Open Air Museum of Industry and Steel (MAIA). On the 21st January, the Director of the HAEU will participate at a workshop at Piombino, in which he will present the Archives of the European Coal and Steel Community.

The project was conceived as a result of the agreement between the AIPAI, the Universities of Florence and Siena, and the Comune of Piombino for the creation of the MAIA, within the framework of the plans for “Città Futura” for the rejuvenation of the industrial area of Piombino.

The project will be focusing on archival research, the elaboration of the plans for the museum, the organization of cultural and scientific events aimed at the promotion of the industrial heritage of Piombino and Italy. This will involve the use of the historically rich HAEU fonds concerning European and Italian policies regarding the steel industry, in the socio-economic, technical and political spheres.

The scientific coordination of the project is going to be undertaken by Dr. Niccolò Tognarini, PhD of the EUI History and Civilization Department.
