Robert Toulemon

The author of the acclaimed book ‘Aimer l’Europe’, Robert Toulemon, has recently deposited his personal papers at the Historical Archives of the European Union. This collection will allow the international research community to get an insight into Mr Toulemon’s work dedicated to European Integration.

The Robert Toulemon fonds was transferred to the Historical Archives of the European Union following the contract of deposit signed in April 2012 by M. Toulemon. It is composed of 96 files. The material is comprised of notes, articles, correspondence and documentation concerning for the most part, his career as high official at the Inspection des Finances in France, the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels and his activities as a pro- European militant.

The documents concern primarily his work at the Ministry for Economy and Finance and subsequently as Chef de Cabinet of Robert Marjolin, Vice-President of the European Commission from 1962 to 1973 and Director General of Industrial affairs, which later became DG III, Industrial, Technology and Scientific Affairs and as such one of his closest collaborators was Altiero Spinelli. Other documents bear witness to his role, on his return to France, as Director of the Cabinet of the Ministry for Cooperation from 1974 to 1975 and as Special Adviser to the Minister of the Environment from 1976 to 1977.

The second part of the fonds is composed of notes and articles emanating from l’ Association française d'Etudes pour l'Union européenne (AFEUR) which was created by Toulemon along with a group of former European officials with a view to promoting the process of European union using contacts from diverse sources, mainly academic. Other documents illustrate the activities of the depositor within various movements and associations (Club Jean Moulin, Club Victor Hugo, Centre international de formation européenne). Robert Toulemon was also Professor at the l’Institut d’études politiques de Paris from 1973 to 1979.
