Open-day at the Historical Archives of the European Union

Villa Salviati

The Historical Archives of the European Union are opening their doors to the public on Friday 10th May to mark the occasion of Europe Day and the event Festival d’Europa which will be held in Florence.

An exhibition “Sources on the history of Europe: Historical Archives of the EU at Florence” will illustrate through a presentation of documents, photographs and films the fundamental role of the Archives in preserving and publicising the historical memory of the European Union.

The visitors will have the occasion during this special day to discover Villa Salviati, the new seat of the Archives by way of a conference, a guided visit of the garden which will reveal a part of Florence’s rich architectural heritage, which has been reopened after a long period of dereliction and restoration.

The programme is as follows:

10:00 – 10:30: Opening note by Carlo Casini, Chair of the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Presence and Future of the Historical Archives of the EU, and book presentation by Professor Mariella Zoppi, La Villa, il Giardino, il Paesaggio – Un parco per gli Archivi Europei a Villa Salviati, Walter Hallstein room, Villa Salviati

10:30 – 16:00: Guided visits of the Villa Salviati gardens in both English and Italian by Città Nascosta (advance booking recommended at Città Nascosta Association)

16:30: Inauguration of the sculpture by Antonio Crivelli, Il Portale del Tempo, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the European University Institute, Pasquale Ferrara

How to reach us :

  • by  bus n°25 (Pratolino) and get off at “Il Cionfo 01” on via Bolognese. The entrance to Villa Salviati is about 100 meters ahead or bus n°1 and get off at “Dall’Ongaro” on via Faentina. The entrance to Villa Salviati is at n°261.
  • On the Open-Day Villa Salviati is not accessible by car, please leave your car in public car park (Salviati FS), via Faentina 348.
