Day of Reflection on the European and Italian politics of Piero Malvestiti

Piero MalvestitiThe Historical Archives of the European Union, the Institute Sturzo in Rome and the Department of History and Civilization at the European University Institute are jointly organising a Day of Reflection on ‘The European and Italian politics of Piero Malvestiti’ on 29 November 2013 at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence.

In the past months, the Historical Archives of the EU and the Institute Sturzo in Rome have inventoried the private archives of Piero Malvestiti (1899–1964), Co-founder of the Italian Christian Democracy, representative of Catholic Anti-fascism, Minister for Transport and then for Industry and Commerce (1951-1954), Vice-President of the European Economic Community (1958-1959) and President of the European Coal and Steel Community (1959-1963).

In view of the opening to the research community of these archives the one-day conference will honour the contribution of Piero Malvestiti to European integration and Italian politics. Speakers at this academic event will be: Federico Romero, Antonio Varsori, Giuseppe Acocella, Ruggero Ranieri, Mauve Carbonell, Anna Maria Fiorentini, Francesco Petrini, Carlo Spagnolo, Lorenzo Mechi and Daniela Preda.

Further to academic presentations and discussions, testimonials will be delivered by Mila Malvestiti (daughter), Flavio Mondello (son-in-law), Virginio Rognoni, former Interior Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of Justice, and Canzio Almini, Head of Cabinet of Piero Malvestiti.

The conference is public and will be held in Italian language.
