New archival resources on the history of the European Commission now open for consultation

European Commission Cabinet 1983The archives service of the European Commission has recently transferred to the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence the archival records of Commission meetings for 1983. The meeting minutes refer to decision-making processes in the various fields of responsibilities of the European Communities. The minutes are now open to public access. An inventory for these files has been drawn and is now available online on the website of the Historical Archives.

 The archival fonds of the European Commission at the Historical Archives of the EU comprises a total of  26620 paper files with most of the files also being available in microfiche copy. Archival files from the European Commission have been transferred from Brussels on an annual basis since 1986 and the documents can be consulted on site at the Historical Archives in accordance with the access rules to archival records of the European Union.

 The Commission of the European Union is considered the executive branch of the EU institutions and exists in its current form since 1967 when the executives of the European Community for Coal and Steel, the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community were merged.
