Piero Malvestiti's private fonds is now available online

Posted on 09 March 2016

The letters of Piero Malvestiti were given to the Istituto Luigi Sturzo in Rome by his family. The Historical Archives of the European Union then proceeded to inventory a total of 553 folders, as well as a photographic collection consisting of 1500 files, after an agreement was signed in 2012.

The documents are particularly interesting as a source for students of Italian history, since they cover the fascist period, when Malvestiti was part of the militant opposition, and the times of resistance and reconstruction, during which Malvestiti had a significant role as publicist, MP and Minister. They also cover the history of European integration, as Malvestiti held the positions of vice-president of the European Economic Commission (EEC), from 1958 to 1959, and of President of the European Coal and Steel Community (CECA), from 1959 to 1964. His papers shed a light on a critical period for the European Communities, marked by the free movement of workers and goods and the constitution of official representatives of non-EU countries inside the European Community. The correspondence with main actors in the process of European construction is particularly rich.

The Malvestiti fonds is freely accessible for consultation in its digital form on site at the HAEU's headquarters. The Istituto Sturzo will soon enable the consultation of the documents in paper format.
