The Historical Archives of the European Union, in collaboration with the EUI library, has completed a project to make its archival fonds discoverable in catalogues of libraries and documentation centres.
The dataset in in MARC21 and MARCXML format is provided in English language and contains descriptions of the numerous archival fonds deposited in Florence, namely the historical archives of EU Institutions, bodies and agencies, and the private archives of individuals and of Non-EU Organisations that contributed to the process of European cooperation and integration.
For instance, a library user looking for “European Defense Community” will be able to retrieve along with traditional publications such as books and periodicals, also archival materials such as documents, letters, interviews, clippings, photographs and other media available at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence on the same subject.
In an online research environment archives and libraries are called to meet readers’ information needs by providing access to increasingly diverse contents and media. With this in mind the project contributes to the integration of archival resources on the construction of Europe into online catalogues and discovery tools of dedicated library and documentation centres.
