UDPN summer school at Villa Salviati

Posted on 05 September 2016

On Thursday 14 July 2016, the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) hosted the summer school of the “Uses of Digitized Heritage Network (UDPN)” research group at Villa Salviati. The group was welcomed by Director Dieter Schlenker and stayed for the full seminar day at Villa Salviati.

Within the programme of the summer school, HAEU archivist Samir Musa presented the digital strategy of the Historical Archives to the group with its pillars of online availability of inventories through the archival database, digitization of existing paper holdings and audio-visual materials for consultation and preservation purposes, the archiving of EU Institutions websites and the long-term preservation of digital-born archival material. Musa also highlighted the HAEU’s coordination role in the harmonization project for archives services of European Union institutions based on international standards, such as ISAD and ISAAR, and in view to improving interoperability, import and export from archival databases and harmonization of archival treatment and description.

Another session was dedicated to the presentation of the Bodies Across Borders (Oral and Visual Memory in Europe and Beyond, BABE) project performed by Liliana Ellena and Leslie Hernàndez-Nova from the EUI.

During the morning workshop, the group was guided by Berangère Blondeau to discover the Eco Learning platform and the ECFOLI project. Eco for Life is an Erasmus + funded project in Media and Information Literacy (MIL) which rely on the appropriation of the common Mediterranean cultural heritage with participants from Cyprus, the Palestine, Portugal and Morocco.

The interdisciplinary UDPN network organises regularly seminars to share knowledge and technical solutions in the field of digital heritage management and preservation and invite to reflections on cultural, pedagogic and scientific use of cultural heritage in libraries, archives and museums.

The summer school session at Villa Salviati concluded with a tour to the HAEU’s vaults and technical installations for long-term preservation of archival materials.
