European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation visits the Historical Archives

On 4 October 2017, Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation visited the European University Institute (EUI) to give the opening lecture of the School of Transnational Governance. The programme also included a visit at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU).

At the HAEU, the commissioner was presented archival documents from European institutions, private deposits by former European Commission presidents and from various European organizations. The topics discussed and fonds presented were the political and commercial relations between Portugal and the European Communities prior to its accession (1962 – 1985), the Portuguese position as new member of the European Communities in GATT negotiations in the early 1990s, the European Commission’s Industrial and Energy Policy (1993-2005), the establishment and role of the European Science Foundation in 1974 and finally the begin of relations between Portugal and the European University Institute leading to its accession to the Institute in 1989.

The Commissioner also took interest in the digitization and reproduction activities of the archival holdings and received a set of facsimile replicas of some outstanding archival documents. The visit to the archives ended with a tour of the vault and the grotto of Villa Salviati.
