The Historical Archives of the European Union is pleased to announce that it co-authored a new guide evaluating currently available image management software solutions, which has been published by the International Council on Archives (ICA).
The increasing volume of digital photography available in the Archives today brings new technical challenges. Therefore the Photographic and Audiovisual Archives Working Group (PAAG) of the ICA believes that it is essential to be equipped with the right management software in order to carry out the tasks associated with creating and maintaining a digital image archive.
Rubén Alcaraz from the EINA Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art de Barcelona and Juan Alonso from the Historical Archives of the European Union, co-authored the guide. Their aim is to not only provide the reader with an overview of the main types of software available for managing digital images but also to give them basic criteria to help choosing the most suitable application.
The guide is part of an ICA-PAAG project, which endeavors to create short guides for the management of photographic and audiovisual archives. Each guide gives a short introduction to a specific subject concerning these archive materials.
As a companion to the guide, an additional 24 applications related to image management have also been added to the software section of the survival kit, which provides a basic overview on what you should know in order to work with photographic and audiovisual collections.
The guide is available to members of the ICA.
