HAEU educational programme awards its annual prize

Posted on 18 May 2018

Students from the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale Antonio Meucci win first prize in the “The Future of Europe” competition, organised for Florentine high schools as a part of the educational programme of the Historical Archives of the European Union.

The Liceo Statale Machiavelli Capponi and the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore Giotto Ulivi received the second and third prize respectively at an award ceremony on the 10 May 2018 at Villa Salviati.

The competition, organised by the HAEU in collaboration with the Metropolitan City of Florence, marks the end of the 2017/18 educational programme, which invited Florentine students to learn more about the European Union and to debate actively about some major issues of the European Union today.

This year’s programme, made up of two sessions, examined the rights and fundamental values of the European Union, as well as the challenges facing Europe today, in particular Brexit, the migration crisis and the emergence of nationalist sentiments.

During the second session, students were asked to simulate a session of the European Parliament where they drafted and voted on resolutions for the three above-mentioned crisis facing Europe today. The resolutions, prepared during that meeting, then served as the basis for the final project they submitted to the competition.

The final projects were then evaluated in terms of content, creativity and commitment by a jury composed of the Director of the HAEU, two members of the educational programme, and a representative of the education directorate of the Metropolitan City of Florence. The competition is an annual event and will be repeated next year with a new programme for the 2018/19 school year.

Each edition offers a tailored programme for students of all ages and uses original documents stored at the Archives to introduce students to important themes related to European integration and citizenship.
