Professor Vassilios Skouris, former President of the Court of Justice of the European Union and former Minister of the Interior of the Hellenic Republic, visited the Historical Archives of the European Union on 26 September 2018. While at the Archives he had a private meeting with Renaud Dehousse, President of the EUI and later Prof. Urska Sadl as part of the HAEU’s oral history programme interviewed him.
During President Skouris’ visit to the Archives, he was presented with key documents from the European Court of Justice, including the landmark sentence Costa v. ENEL of 1967 which introduced the principal of primacy of Community legislation over national legislation. The archivists responsible for the ECJ’s deposit at the HAEU also showed him some historical documents from the collections of two important European jurists, Fernand Dehousse and Antonio Cassese.
The visit of Professor Skouris took place in the framework of a public interview series organised by the EUI’s School of Transnational Governance. Four EUI researchers took part in the interview, which was moderated by Miles Johnson, editor of the Financial Times. The public interview recorded on this occasion can be found here.
