The Historical Archives of the European Union will join in celebrating the
International Archives Day 2019 delivering a new video on the importance of preserving documents for future generations by their digital transition.
The focus of this year’s International Archives Day is on designing the archives of the 21st century. The days leading up to the 9th June will be an occasion not only to celebrate the great work of our colleagues internationally, but also to question ourselves on what our vision on the future of archival preservation and access is.
As EU institutional archives, designing the archives of the 21st century means empowering European citizens through digital access to our archival fonds; disseminating EU documents thanks to the potential global outreach that new technologies offer; sharing de-materialised copies while preserving paper and digital files; granting a reliable digital repository where electronic files can be accessed and consulted in the long term.
We believe that opening our repositories through digital technologies is among our primary goals, not only for easing the work of researchers and academics worldwide, but also for involving all citizens in the mission of preserving our collective memory.
The HAEU is also participating in the International Archives Week events with a training course and master class called 'The Court of Justice in the archives', that will be held on 6-7 June in Villa Salviati, seat of our archives.
