Following a transfer from the European Parliament to Florence, 492 new files are being made available to the research community, including two types of records: European legal acts from 2005 to 2009 and the archives of the Secretaries-General's Cabinets for the period 1958 to 1986.
The European legal acts constitute a collection of original directives and regulations from 1985 to 2004. They are divided into two categories: ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’. The primary legislation includes all the treaties which are the basis for EU action, while the secondary legislation ecompasses all the regulations, directives and decisions which are derived from the principles and objectives set out in these treaties.
The Cabinet records of the various Secretaries-General illustrate the administrative work of the Parliament and relate to the mandates of Frits de Nerée, tot Babberich, from 1958 to 1963, Hans Nord, from 1963 to 1979, and Hans Joachim Opitz, from 1979 to 1986.
The Secretariat’s role is to coordinate legislative work and organise plenary sessions and meetings. He also provides technical and expert assistance to parliamentary bodies and members of Parliament, acting in a supporting role during their mandates.
The fonds will soon be the subject of a detailed inventory carried out by the Historical Archives of the European Parliament.
