On September the 20th, a new archival deposit was received by the Historical Archives of the European Union. AMICE, the Association of Mutual Insurers and Insurance Cooperatives in Europe, decided to ship its archives to Villa Salviati for preservation and accessibility to researchers.
Sarah Goddard, Secretary General of AMICE, said, “We are excited to have been able to hand our archive from AMICE’s predecessor AISAM to such an important and prestigious project as the Historical Archives of the European Union. Our archive is now available to researchers to help them better understand the work of our association. We have worked on behalf of the mutual insurance movement with the European institutions since 1964 to ensure that mutual and cooperative insurers have been recognised and treated fairly in the evolution of an integrated Europe”. She continued, “Our cherished archive is in the best of hands with the HAEU.”
Dieter Schlenker, HAEU Director, welcomed this new deposit by saying: “With the deposit of the AMICE archives in Florence, researchers into the history of European integration receive a new valuable resource. Once processed and inventoried, these archives will shed light on an important element in the history of ‘Social Europe’, the cooperation and harmonisation of the insurance sector in the history of the European Union since the early 1960s.”
AMICE was founded in January 2008 with the aim of representing the interests of mutual and cooperative insurers all over Europe, regardless of their size or legal status. It provides a platform for cooperation among insurer companies across national borders, in order to exchange experiences and discuss key issues related to this sector. AMICE currently has 90 direct members and represents about 800 insurers directly through 5 national associations Europe.
