To celebrate the UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on 27 October 2019, the Historical Archives of the European Union is pleased to announce the addition of the “Advertising Europe Film Collection” to its repository. The database holds detailed information on over 250 information films which promoted the idea of European integration between the late 1940s until the early 1970s. These films were commissioned and produced by European institutions (CoE, ECSC, EEC, EURATOM), pro-European movements, national governments, and transatlantic agencies to inform the public about the new supranational organizations, and to create an affirmative as well as collective sense of belonging among its citizens.
These unique research collection gives an insight into the early audiovisual media campaigns of the European institutions and reveals their narrative and visual argumentation strategies to communicate the idea of European integration. It is possible to search for films by country, date, topic, or keyword, and all entries are presented with filmographic details and a short content abstract.
The research project between the Historical Archives of the European Union and University of Hamburg will provide additional details and newly found films on a regular basis.
