All four Departments (ECO, HEC, LAW, SPS) accept applications from candidates applying for a Fernand Braudel Fellowship in the framework of the EUI Widening Europe Programme. The deadline for applications is 31 March 2025 / 14.00 CEST.

Application Procedure

There are two distinct phases in the application process:

  1. Register your application
  2. Submit your application by the deadline

Once you have registered your application you may continue to work on the application details and attachments until the deadline. Submit the application only when you have filled in all the information correctly and have successfully uploaded the final version of the attachments.

After submission, it will not be possible to update or modify your application.

The fellowships are open to established academics with an international reputation. Former professors or fellows of the EUI are eligible after three years have elapsed since their last contract with the EUI.

Candidates must hold the nationality of one of the countries listed below and be affiliated with a university or public research centre, residing in one of these countries throughout the whole period of stay at the EUI.

Inside the European Union: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Outside the European Union: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo1, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

Candidates are requested to submit a proof of nationality and university or public research centre affiliation (both in English and valid throughout the whole period of stay at the EUI) as part of their EUI online application (please consult the section Required Documents for more information). The proof of nationality will be processed only by the EUI Administration and the relevant funding authority(ies), and not be distributed to the EUI selection committee.

Languages

Fellows should have a good knowledge of English and of any other language relevant to their proposed research.

  • Prepare your CV (a short CV of maximum 5 pages including education, professional experience, prizes and other major achievements) with a selected list of publications (a list of your books, contributions to books and major professional journals) in PDF
  • Prepare a research proposal (2-4 pages) in PDF
  • Proof of nationality and university or public research centre affiliation, both in English and valid throughout the whole period of stay at the EUI. The proof of nationality can, for example, be a passport, national ID card, etc. The proof of university or public research centre affiliation should be an official certification issued by the administration of your university or public research centre. The document should be in English, confirm your current position, and indicate the start and end date (if applicable) of your affiliation (it can e.g. be a contract, a signed and stamped certificate from your HR service, etc.). Please not that a university or public research centre card is not sufficient. (n.b. the proof of nationality will be processed only by the EUI Administration and the relevant funding authority(ies), and not be distributed to the EUI selection committee).

Use standard international fonts and avoid macros, special characters, and password-protected attachments.

The Research proposal should also meet the requirements established by the EUI Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence for Research. In particular, candidates should refrain from having Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) autonomously write substantial or integral parts of the documents. When using AI to produce novel content, they must acknowledge and reference the parts of the content that have been AI-generated.

Reference Letters

The EUI does not request reference letters at this stage, but candidates are asked to provide the names and contact details of two referees whom the EUI may contact at a later date.
