This online discussion will bring together perspectives from around the world to discuss the decarbonisation process in the agriculture sector in developing countries.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), have increased rapidly within the 20th Century. Agriculture alone contributes a third of total global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from crop cultivation and livestock production. For instance, the contribution of agricultural GHG emissions is estimated at 60% for Africa and Latin America, 30% for Asia, and approximately 10% for Europe and North America.

However, the agriculture sector holds a significant climate change mitigation potential with the ability to remove or sequester up to 1.6 tonnes of global annual CO2 equivalent emissions annually at relatively low carbon prices through sustainable options.

This discussion uses a multidisciplinary approach to explore sustainable solutions to reduce agricultural emissions in order to develop robust policies to decarbonise the agricultural sector.
