In this conference, Alcide de Gasperi Centre research fellow, Jacopo Cellini will present his research on the European Investment Bank's (EIB) approach to environmental protection from the 1970s to the 1990s. Drawing on the growing academic literature on the early stages of the European environmental policy, and on an extensive use of primary sources, this research traced the relevance of environmental issues in the Bank's activity and investment strategies, with a view to painting a broader picture of the emerging discussion on environmental protection, which involved institutional and non-institutional actors.
Dieter Schlenker, Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union, Henry von Blumenthal, Deputy Dean at the EIB Institute, and Zuzana Kaparova, EIB Environmental Specialist, will provide opening remarks. Discussants, EUI History Professor Corinna Unger and Dr. Laura Iozzelli, will contextualise the study within the research perspectives on environmental history and the EIB currently ongoing at the EUI.
