This conference, organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, explores the legacy of Germany's former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, especially with respect to European integration, Southern Europe and the broader Mediterranean area.
Over the course of two days, five panels will examine Helmut Kohl as an historical figure; Kohl's embrace of Spain, Portugal and Greece as new partners in the European Union and western alliance; Kohl's approach to relations with Italy; the European People's Party and the Mediterranean Dimension; and foreign and development policy in the broader mediterranean region.
The proceedings will take place mainly in the German language (see attached programme).
At 18:30 on Monday evening, Prof. Dr. Joachim Bitterlich (former Ambassador and advisor to Helmut Kohl) will deliver a distinguished lecture at Palazzo Buontalenti (in English).
