Migration and Mobility are quintessential aspects of the human existence. But they are neither self-evident nor self-explanatory. It is not without reason that ideas about the movement of peoples, goods, or ideas are connected to hopes and fears, to expectations and anxieties.
Mobility is often associated with freedom and opportunity; sometimes even seen as substitution for life itself. But it also sparks anxieties about social upheaval and supposedly dangerous change, inciting the political strive to control moving elements in society.
In our working group, we will dive deeper into the complexities of historical movements and discuss how the elements of mobility and migration are connected to social and political processes.
Are movements of ideas, peoples, and goods influenced by historical circumstances, or are they themselves the drivers of historical change? How can we theorise the complex relationship between movement and historical change? How can we show that migration and mobility are connected to meaning and power?
To explore these different aspects, our EUI working group will dive into theoretical approaches to movement and mobilities as well as provide a platform of discussion to explore how mobility and migration matter for our own work. And we invite the whole department to embark with us on this journey.
