In this episode, Gemma Fenton, Psychologist in the EUI Psychological Support and Wellbeing Service, joined the EDI team, Giuseppe Zago, EDI Officer, and Christina Pasanikolaki, EDI Trainee, for a discussion on mental health awareness in the workplace and academia, and the impact of mental health related-language on people’s perception and well-being.
Gemma defines mental health as a dynamic and fluid process, that often fluctuates. “Mental health is a bit of a construct,” she explains, “a lot of things play into our mental health on a daily basis. It is something that shifts as we move through time, it is not a static concept.” She also addresses the stigma that still exists around mental health difficulties, despite them affecting one in four people, and emphasizes the importance of discussing these issues openly.
The episode highlights the significance of having clear boundaries between work and personal time for people's mental health. Drawing from her experience at the EUI, Gemma explains how challenging it can be to maintain this separation in academia, where the environment is increasingly competitive, and boundaries are often unclear. She highlights how taking time off can actually enhance creativity, allowing ideas to mature.
Gemma encourages listeners to explore what it truly means to be kind to themselves by recognising their body and mind’s needs and seeking support when challenges start to appear. “We change things one thought at a time. We need to be patient with ourselves because change takes time,” she says.
Finally, Gemma discusses how societal factors can impact well-being, creating additional struggles and disadvantages based on characteristics such as gender or sexuality. At the same time, in a society that prioritizes productivity, it is essential for organisations to support their members, by listening to their needs and creating a safe and understanding environment.
